A Christian is...
We learn from Acts 11:26 that "the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch." The word "Christian" is only used three times in the New Testament (cf. Acts 26:28; I Pet. 4:16). The essence of the word communicates that one is a follower of Christ. However, a more comprehensive meaning of the term can be extracted from the New Testament by examining how followers of Christ are identified and described within its pages.

What is a Christian? Let it be observed that...

In faith, a Christian is a believer. "He who believes and is baptized will be saved." (Mark 16:16). "Repent and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins" (Acts 2:38).

In knowledge, a Christian is a disciple (or learner). "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:31,32). Matthew 10:24 also reveals - "A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master."

In character, a Christian is a saint." To all who are in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints" (Rom. 1:7).

In influence, a Christian is a light." You are the light of the world." (Matt. 5:14). "You yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness" (Rom. 2:19).

In conflict, a Christian is a soldier." You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ" (II Tim. 2:3).

In communion, a Christian is a friend. Jesus plainly declared - "You are My friends if you do whatever I command You" (John 15:14).

In worldly position, a Christian is a pilgrim. "Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul" (I Pet. 2:11).

In relationship, a Christian is a child. "And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, 'Abba, Father!'" (Gal. 4:6). "The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God" (Rom. 8:16).

In expectation, a Christian is an heir. "And if children, then heirs--heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together" (Rom. 8:17).

A true Christian is a follower of Christ, identified with Christ, and belonging to Jesus the Christ. Are you a true follower of the Lord?
